Things That NEVER Change

Psalms 117: O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. 2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth forever. Praise ye the Lord.

This psalm is the shortest in the Hebrew hymnal, as well as the shortest chapter in the Bible. It has also been calculated to be the very middle of recorded scripture. Biblical history before the recording of this psalm is full of change. Sin and revival; kingdoms warring, rising and falling; times of abundance and times of famine; times of joy as well as sorrow; one generation passing while another entered the world. No doubt the psalmist understood what we have come to know, the only thing constant is change. Solomon expressed this in Proverbs 27:1: Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. The New Testament Apostle, James, similarly stated: “ … ye know not what shall be on the morrow.” Yet, in the middle of scriptural history, someone recognized there are some things that never change: God’s merciful kindness toward man, and his truth. So confident was the songwriter, he made the bold assertion that man could count on the same forever. Of course, mercy and truth are two eternal attributes of the everlasting God.

Hebrews 13:8: Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

So much is expressed in the above verse covering past, present, and future. According to Psalm 117, everyone should praise the Lord for these things which never change. As our world continues to be altered, we can take comfort in knowing there is a God who is forever as he has always been. For this, he is worthy of praise, and of one’s complete trust!
