John 18:38: Pilate saith unto him (Jesus), What is truth?

Evidently, Pilate did not realize the very embodiment of truth stood before him at that moment. Yet, the confused noise of, and pressure from the people left Pilate in this perplexed state of what to believe. Perhaps, like many today, Pilate was skeptical. It is just as likely he figured there were no certain truths; that truth was a matter of perception, and always in a state of flux. Sadly, Pilate delivered truth to the will of the mob, never to know truth’s liberating power.

Truth is unadulterated fact. Truth is constant. Truth is dependable and accurate. Circumstances don’t change Truth. Truth settles the question, and ends confusion. Truth therefore offers clarity, soundness, and peace. Such is the Word of God, the Bible in its pure form.

As the world of Jesus’ disciples was being turned upside down, the Lord prayed for them, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” (John 17:17). Earlier, the Lord had declared in John 8:31-32, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Primarily, Jesus was speaking of freedom from the dominion and consequences of sin. Of course, sin is at the root of all human suffering, fear, confusion, etc. None of this existed in man’s original state before disobeying God’s Word. So, knowing and obeying the truth of God’s Word can liberate man from sin and all of its debilitating effects. In the Bible we find absolute truth that has endured from eternity past, and will remain unchanged forever. What a hope and solace in times of fear and uncertainty! What understanding and direction when darkness surrounds us!

Ps 119:89-90: Forever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven. 90 Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.

Psalms 100:5: For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
