Follow Me

Matthew 4:18-19, “And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me…”

This would be the beginning of a short but eventful journey for two of Jesus’ disciples. Throughout the ministry of Jesus, these men walked close by his side learning amazing truths and bearing witness to many miraculous works. What would happen to them when Jesus left to return to Heaven? His disciples had followed him through many things, but was Jesus’ call to follow him finished when he ascended?

Luke 24:49, “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”

Acts 2:1-4, “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting… And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Right before Jesus ascended, he told his disciples to go to one last place: Jerusalem. When his disciples did as they were commanded, Jesus sent his Spirit, the Holy Ghost (John 14:16-18, 26). The Holy Ghost enabled them to be his followers not only in body, but also in spirit. Thank God that his call of “follow me” did not end with his ascension but still enables all of us to be his followers today!

Acts 2:38-39, “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

John 7:37-39, “… Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”
