The First Day of the Week

Acts 20:7: And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

Commentators agree that the First day of the week, also known as the Lord’s day (Rev 1:10), became the day the church would gather.  It therefore, was a sacred time of fellowship, celebration, and receiving the Word of the Lord.  From the passage in Acts 20, we can assume the occasion was devoted to the service of the Lord with no consideration of time.  Oh, what an opportunity when God’s people gather with a singular focus on what God has in store!  And to be present at such a gathering is to experience firsthand the miraculous power of God.

It was in the Synagogue where Jesus spoke the words found in Luke 4:18-19 (Amplified Bible - AMP),  "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), Because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to announce release (pardon, forgiveness) to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy), 19 to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the favor of God abound greatly]."  Jesus continued in verse 21 (MSG), "You've just heard Scripture make history. It came true just now in this place."

On this Sunday, the church house may be closed, but the Lord of the church house is still open for business.  Why not dedicate this day to seeking the Lord, wherever you are, and to the pursuit of the promises found in the Gospel? This could be the day you experience the fulfillment of scripture in your life.
